😮 SHOCKING Performance Under $10k - Deep Dive Into the Sourcepoint 888 by Andrew Jones at His Studio
Many people ask me what is the best speaker under $10k. There are so many variables in terms of taste, room equation, aesthetics, and design style. Plus, you can get incredible performance melding subs with satellites. However, there are very few speakers under $10k that give you more than just a taste of the cost-no-object speakers as-is.
The Sourcepoint 888 are a no-brainer for many (if not most) audiophiles under $10k although there are tons of good options. It's only $5k and a must audition even if you are considering spending much more.
This video includes a walkthru with the designer Andrew Jones and some behind the scenes information about their design and other tidbits.

    Love your channel. I'm interested in learning more about DSP. Intrigued by bacch but using a Mac is a no-go. Would you have any suggestions that are PC based? Was watching some videos on Legacy Audio's wavelet which does some of this. Just thought I'd ask your opinions for non-mac solutions.

      The Mac is basically just an endpoint and after you run measurements, you don't need to use it. It can just be in the background. You can use whatever Windows PC that runs Roon Server to control music. That being said, you're really not having to learn anything Mac related. This is the only application your going to run on the Mac other than maybe internet browsing which requires no special Mac skills. You could also buy the ADIO and DIO which you control with an iPad which most know how to use easily.

    The Sourcepoint models are incredible but you can't beat the laws of small room acoustics. Yes, you can find a nearly-perfect spot for full range stereo speakers in a room for even bass response but it'll be just that. One spot. Even then, it may still not be entirely flat. In small room acoustics, a properly integrated multi-sub approach will always give the best experience. Again, the Sourcepoints are incredible. Anyone would be blessed to have a pair.

      On their own, the 888 will go lower than the Nxtremes in-room and anechoically. For most people who like box speakers and no subs, the 888 on their own will give a more full range and better off-axis behavior. That being said...the Nxtremes are open baffles and array for bass loading (which has advantages for certain tastes including mine) assuming you mate them properly to subs. When I mate them with 2 subs and Bacch/ORC, it provides BETTER than any cost-no-object system I've heard, BUT again that's a lot of variables other than just the speakers. If you look at the recent UA-cam short I've released, the measurements I'm getting at the listening position in-ear are something you can't duplicate no matter what speakers you buy...unless you have certain tools. With the right tools and subs, the Nxtremes have my preferred open baffle presentation and ceiling of performance. However, we're talking well over 5 figures costs involved to add the subs and tools necessary to reach that potential. On their own with zero help from subs or other tools, I'd recommend the 888 at $5k already build easily.

    So why does he not design a very simple active crossover package to sell with the speakers instead of the passive and let the customer provide what ever amps they want. Just enough of a device to pass the costumer's preamp to multiple amps with predetermined crossover points and slopes.

    • @AudiophileJunkie
      @AudiophileJunkie День тому

      It wouldn't sell... Not enough people know the benefits and then you'd need to buy more amps if it's not included.

    • @glenncurry3041
      @glenncurry3041 День тому

      @@AudiophileJunkie A major idea of the interview was getting away from passive xovers. Most people have no clue it even exists. Even high end reviewers it seems! Where would you source an active xover if you wanted to? But one specifically designed to just replace the passive xover with hard wired hinge and slopes would be fairly simple. Remove the cost of the passive xover and supply this dedicated to this model one. Lots of bridged amps used as mono-blocks out there that could be split again and just have another one added to give everything needed. I bet there is enough of a market if properly marketed. Think inexpensive Linkwitz.

    • @AudiophileJunkie
      @AudiophileJunkie День тому

      A state-of-the-art crossover is included with the Bacch on top of all the other benefits. It's best nowadays to do it in the digital domain and have access to far more slopes and options than an analog based active crossover can do.

    • @johnstone7697
      @johnstone7697 22 години тому

      @glenncurry3041 An active crossover can improve a speaker a lot, but leaving it up to the customer to get it working properly is a very risky proposition. Gain matching, correct phasing, and getting the low and high pass connections correct is critical. Get it wrong, and you stand a good chance of blowing a driver. In a system where that driver is coaxial, such a mistake can be very expensive. If a customer has 2 (or 3) different power amps, how is he sure he's got the correct gain or phase? That would require some means of measuring and trimming the amps. And some amps invert phase too, which would be an additional problem. Too many places for things to go wrong. Most manufacturers can't (and don't want to) provide the very high level of technical support a separate line level xover would require. This is why most active speakers come with the amps built in.

  • @poochymama2878
    @poochymama2878 День тому

    All other things being equal, an active speaker will always sound better than the equivalent passive speaker. Fortunately we have some really great passive speaker designers that can get us 95% of the way there, and a great passive will beat a good active.

    Fascinating and revealing video, thanks for sharing. In a previous shared video, Andrew discussed the influence of the Quad on his sound design aesthetics and his Mofi speakers, at least from what I’ve heard at shows, couldn’t be further afield, sound wise, from those legendary Quad’s. Even replicated through the crude UA-cam transfer the Quads sound so much more musical and natural, not like speakers at all. When I listen to the Mofi speakers I hear sound but not musicality. Sure, the price point and manufacturing are vastly different but I don’t hear the influence of the Quad in any of his speakers.

      Most graphs (unless done by certain software like the Bacch) are barely even a taste of what's happening at the listening position ... Especially in the bass because they are taken 1 foot away. There are ways to use that data to extrapolate what may be happening at the listening position, but that depends on the experience looking at the graphs and how those measurements were taken. Those are the two variables people miss and I wanted to point out in the video.

      It's a delicate balance... Using advanced skills and tools in the hobby can be intimidating, but these shorts showed you can basically get great results letting technology do everything in a worst case scenario, but also optimize things further investing in learning a few skills.

    I'm for DSP with caveats, if the perceived sound quality for the human listening is improved, I'm for it. But so often, I've seen people chasing the perfect flat response and end up with a sound that is lifeless and boring. Also, recordings can sound so different from one another, as do sources, and so is DSP the total answer. I remain open to being convinced.

      I get it, but the irony is that DSP allows you to do more that just a flat response. The Bacch gives 6 curves by the most famous recording engineers and their flavor... Plus you can manually change things to whatever taste you want or even account for hearing loss. Thus, it's the ONLY way to do all those things. Now with measurements in your ear at the listening position, they are also the most accurate measurements possible.. Versus estimating in the past. Once you hear perfectly corrected bass though, I seriously doubt you will go back to not using DSP. The fear of accuracy and high fidelity is unwarranted over the long haul of most recordings... You can always find examples where flat isn't preferred, but you'll see that accuracy wins the war regardless of an individual battle.

    Yes, agree. But it is worse than you say.. I would say that "what you could have" (that those that don't DSP/measure "could have" as frequency response in room.) In my experience that in not "could have".. It is more that they "most probably have". And shit out from speakers gives shit in to ears.😂 (No you have not any golden ears and can't detect and determine that it is -8 dB at 731 Hz and +7 dB at 941 Hz and so on in your sweet spot.😢) Even IF you could detect the level of dB deviation and at what exact Hz and they for ≈12 places in the hearable frequency range (that you can't).. What are you going to about it?? Can you move speakers so that ALL the 12 dB deviation points will get ±0 bB. Or change one to all components that fix all the 12 dB deviation points.. No, whatever you do you will never fix your issues at sweet spot that your are not even realizing that you have 12 of them..!❤ Good example! I see those old audiophiles that hide behind that they are "purists"..😅 For me a "purist" means that someone that can't or want not to learn new things and are afraid of newer technology.😂 Today even a ape can carry new HiFi components and connect two RCA/XLR and think it is better but the truth is that it is just different..😂

      Yeah it's pretty much a guarantee most are seeing even worse uncorrected and they don't realize the improvement possible. As you say, they hide behind excuses out of either fear, laziness, or brainwashing. The good news is that I'm showing that the fear is no longer an issue (ala Joe Rogan on Fear Factor 🤠). There's a product that will do it all for you no matter how bad it is, but you can also leverage your skills over time to help it out even more.

    BTW, the caption blocked the perceived loudness reduction which was about 12db. If any reduction in perceived loudness is too much for your system due to lack of gain, you can manually limit the reduction amount (at the expense of maybe not perfectly flat results...but nobody on the planet gets even close to flat IN-EAR AT THE LISTENING POSITION without the Bacch anyway). FYI, using more of your analog volume control can often lead to less passive parts in the signal path, so that's another side benefit. I'll show how to get even better results in terms of less volume reduction in part 3.

      It can indeed be intimidating when you first look at it, but after spending a bit of time, the basics can get going relatively easily. The advanced functions are a bit more of a learning curve for sure! And when people with fantastic knowledge in the community such as you share their knowledge it makes it even better. Infinitely grateful. My perceived loudness difference is 7db. By rearranging my room and my bass traps trying to get it even lower. Met you once at the Toronto audio show. It was a pleasure. Looking forward to your next video 👊🏻

      That's great results...yeah...If I spent a few hours, I could get things even better before using ORC...the third video got it down to 8db and I could have got it down to 6 by choosing the 2db max gain default, but once you have the perceived loudness low enough for your overall system gain, a few DB volume becomes less material and I go for maximum FR results.
